Captain Cookie & The Milk Man Now Open in Foggy Bottom

From one of his Captain Cookie & the Milk Man food trucks, 29-year-old Kirk Francis never sold more than 700 cookies in a day—and that was during peak summer season.

But when he opened his first storefront last Thursday at 2000 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, he says he had a steady stream of customers through the day, and after 6 p.m. as the work day ended, a line of about 100 people wrapped around the establishment. All in all, Captain Cookie sold around 3,500 cookies on its opening day. “We ran out of cookies and had to close early,” Francis says.

The shop sells all seven staple flavors: chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodle, Nutella, peanut butter, ginger molasses, and vegan chocolate chip. Look out for recurring daily specials, too. The cookies are $1.25 each or $4 sandwiched around a thick scoop of local Trickling Springs ice cream. The Pennsylvania-based creamery also supplies the shop with a variety of milks including chocolate, soy, whole, skim, and two percent.

Francis began supplying cookies to Sidamo Coffee on H Street NE in 2009 in addition to a day job at the Department of Homeland Security. Fast-forward six years, Sidamo is supplying the Captain Cookie store with its coffee and espresso. Housemade sodas—in flavors like ginger ale, root beer, and cream soda—are also available.

Meanwhile, all four Captain Cookie food trucks remain open, and Francis plans to expand his business to Orlando, Fla. in the next two months. But he says the store will be a nice break from life on the road.

“The major benefit is having heat and air conditioning, which the food truck doesn’t have. So if it’s 10 degrees outside, it’s 10 degrees in the truck. And if it’s 90 degrees outside, it’s about 110 degrees in the truck,” Francis says. “But if business fails here, it’s not like we can just drive the store to a different spot.”
