If you're anything like us, you never really thought about what brown sugar is exactly. It just always been there for you, waiting at the grocery store to make its way into your chocolate chip cookies. But, brown sugar is in fact made. And if you keep your pantry well stocked for baking, you can make your own at home and never find yourself in a brown-sugar shortage again.
To make brown sugar you need one cup of white sugar and one tablespoon of molasses. Mix the two together -- this job is faster if you use an electric mixer -- until completely incorporated. Use it or store it -- it doesn't matter, because you just made brown sugar. If you want to take it up a notch and make dark brown sugar, just add another tablespoon of molasses. Joy the Baker does a great job of showing you just how easy making brown sugar can be.
Once you've got your hands on brown sugar, use it to make these recipes.
