Mango-ginger lassis and Indian dosas—lentil and rice crepes filled with vegetables and topped with chutney— are the latest food offerings to pop up at Union Market. DC Dosa, which also has a location at the Foggy Bottom Whole Foods, opened at the eating hub last week, filling a niche for those with vegan and gluten-free diets. Founder and Bombay native Priya Ammu says the demand has already exceeded her expectations: "We sold out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I had to end up closing at 4 instead of 8."
The menu is identical to the one at Whole Foods with fillings like curried potatoes and eggplant with sweet potatoes and chutneys in tomato peanut or onion tamarind flavors. Ammu says she's hoping to eventually introduce other snacks from her childhood, including bhel puri chaat. The dosas can be paired with mango-ginger or avocado-lime lassis.
Ammu's also going to be working out of food incubator Union Kitchen to bottle up her homemade chutneys, which will also come in flavors like mango-lime and sweet roasted garlic. The chutneys will available for sale exclusively at Union Market within the next week or two. Ammu is looking to package some of her spice mixes as well.
DC Dosa is currently at Union Market on a temporary basis for at least the next couple months, but Ammu says her goal is to set up shop there permanently.
