French fries are the most requested item at Duke's Grocery. Sadly, the kitchen doesn't have room for a fryer, so the cooks can't make them. But when the team behind the Dupont gastropub opens a new spot called Duke's Counter in Woodley Park later this year, diners will finally get their fix of fries—or "chips" as the British-inspired eatery will call them.
The new restaurant will have a little bit less seating, but more kitchen space, which means an expanded menu overall. Sandwich staples and the Proper Burger will remain, but expect some new dishes like fish and chips and wings as well as kids options to show up on the ever-changing chalkboard menu. Managing partner Daniel Kramer says they also hope to offer takeout at some point as well.
The copper-topped bar will be larger as well, so Duke's Counter will be able to offer more beers on draft and a larger collection of spirits.
"It's a slightly different place with some slightly different quirks," Kramer says. And as for the slightly different name: "We're trying to conjure up a friendly neighborhood diner, deli, counter—that kind of mindset."
Duke's Counter replaces jazz bar Zoo Bar Cafe at 3000 Connecticut Ave. NW. Kramer hopes to carry on the tradition of live music at the new restaurant, although it might not happen right away.
