Soon, you'll be able to get warm chocolate chunk cookies delivered to your door until 3 a.m.
Insomnia Cookies, founded in a University of Pennsylvania dorm room in 2003 by then-student Seth Berkowitz, has spread to 85 locations from Boston to Miami. This summer, the company will open a storefront and delivery service based at 2318 18th St. NW in Adams Morgan, serving milk and cookies, cookie ice cream sandwiches, and other cookie-based desserts.
Cookies come in flavors like chocolate peanut butter cup, s'more deluxe, and snickerdoodle. Berkowitz says they're baked fresh in-house each day, multiple times a day. Delivery drivers take only a few orders at a time so that the cookies are still warm when they arrive. Berkowitz says the goal is to be able to deliver within 30 minutes, so the delivery zone will likely be within a two to three mile radius of the store. (They'll be evaluating traffic patterns before determining an exact map.) The service will have a $6 delivery minimum and $1.99 delivery fee.
The actual shop will be rather small. Berkowitz says most Insomnia Cookies outposts have only five to 10 seats, so it's mostly a grab-and-go spot. The shop will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., and delivery will last from noon to 3 a.m.
"The nighttime is the biggest percentage of sales," Berkowitz says.
Berkowitz claims he spent five years finding the right location in D.C. And this one likely won't be the last.
"Our goal is to have many, many stories in D.C., whether it's in Georgetown or Foggy Bottom," he says. "There's areas where we've tried to enter, and it takes a while. Once we get in, and we're able to get that first domino to fall, typically many, many follow thereafter."
