After 12 years, Bangkok Joe's was starting to show its wrinkles, especially as the Georgetown waterfront and neighboring restaurants got some serious surgery. So owners and wife-husband team Aulie Bunyarataphan and Mel Oursinsiri closed it on June 1. In its place, today they open Mama Rouge, a Southeast Asian-French restaurant named after Bunyarataphan's Thai grandmother.
The menu combines dishes from both cultures, including some recipes adapted from the real Mama Rouge. Hors d'ouvres range from pommes frites to crispy pork spring rolls. The rest of the offerings split into categories including pho, salads, banh mi, curry, barbecue, and noodles. The curries, like a Malaysian massaman and fishmonger sriracha stew, come with jasmine rice and a baguette. Meanwhile, banh mi with stuffings like coconut shrimp and fried pork belly can be sandwiched between a baguette or croissant. Plats du jour include duck a l'orange on Mondays and steak au poivre on Saturdays and Sundays. The wine list also leans French.
