Obama Cuts In Line At Franklin Barbecue, Makes Up For It By Paying It Forward

July 11, 2014 0

Even the president pays it forward.

After speaking in Austin, Texas, Thursday, President Obama stopped in at Franklin Barbecue, a restaurant Austin360 says is “well known for its great brisket and extremely long waits.” Since presidents apparently have schedules to keep, Obama cut to the front of the hours-long line — then bought lunch for those behind him as a thank-you.

“I know this is a long line,” Obama reportedly told the crowd, apologizing for his actions. “I feel real bad, but — I’m gonna cut.”

The restaurant’s owner, Aaron Franklin, told the Austin American-Statesman the president is the first person he’s allowed to skip the line, adding that Obama ordered enough meat to “feed a small village.”

That village includes the two people Obama jumped in line. They put “three pounds of beef, two pounds of ribs, a half-pound of sausage and a half-pound of turkey” on the president’s tab, reports the Houston Chronicle. After hearing their order, Obama joked, “Now hold on. How many folks are you guys feeding? Just kidding.”

Per Austin360, Obama ended up paying around $300 for his own order, and an undisclosed amount more to cover the people he cut in line.

It’s Free Slurpee Day At 7-Eleven Because You Know, It’s 7/11

July 11, 2014 0

Today all your Slurpee dreams come true. Because we know you have them. It’s Free Slurpee Day at 7-Eleven, which means you can get a free, 12-ounce Slurpee at 7-Eleven stores from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you can’t get your Slurpee fix with a single small one today, don’t worry. You can feed your mind with these 12 amazing facts about Slurpees and read more about the invention of the Slurpee on Priceonomics.

Still want more? 7-Eleven is celebrating all week by giving away free stuff until July 19. Tomorrow you can get a free Big Gulp, Sunday you can get a free bag of M&M’s Birthday Cake Chocolate Candies, and the giveaways continue until July 19, when you can get another free small Slurpee. All you have to do to get these freebies is download the 7-Eleven app. (Worth it? Debatable.)

By calling upon customers to use their smartphones to get free stuff, 7-Eleven, like so many other chains, is trying to reach millennials. Vice president of marketing and brand communication Laura Gordon told USA Today that the chain’s customers are “way above average” in using smartphones. The chain hopes to engage these customers to boost short term sales and also to introduce them to new snacks, like the Doritos Loaded (which could only be targeted to millennials.)

7-Eleven has been giving free Slurpees away on July 11 for 12 years, and has adopted this date as its birthday. This year, the nation’s largest convenience store chain is 87 years old.

Planning to give away more than 7 million Slurpees today, 7-Eleven will “serve more people on this day than any other day,” says Laura Gordon. Go get ’em.
